Core Roles and Responsibilities

  • Vehicle Operation: Drive and maneuver heavy-duty trucks (tandem, straight, or articulated) in diverse conditions, including off-road terrain, narrow roads, and busy construction zones.
  • Loading & Weight Compliance: Supervise the loading process to ensure materials are balanced and correctly distributed. Make certain trucks are not loaded beyond their GVW.
  • Delivery & Dumping: Use hydraulic or electric controls to tilt the truck bed and dump contents exactly where directed.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere to all traffic laws, company policies, and Department of Transportation (DOT) safety regulations. This includes securing loads with tarps and following site-specific safety protocols.
  • Inspection & Maintenance: Perform mandatory pre-trip, en route, and post-trip inspections of vehicle systems (brakes, lights, tires, fluids). Routine maintenance like greasing the truck may be required.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records for long haul, including driver logs (hours of service), delivery receipts, bills of lading.
  • Communication: Maintain constant contact with dispatchers and site supervisors via radio or smartphone to coordinate schedules and report issues.

Key Requirements

  • Licensing: Typically requires a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) tied to the type of truck you are driving. Typically Class 1 for semi-trailers, Class 3 for Tandem trucks and class 5 for single axle trucks with hydraulic brakes.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to sit for long periods, lift heavy items (often up to 50 lbs), and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with Google maps is helpful.
