Ask the Gardener

In the winter I use salt to de-ice my sidewalk and then in the spring the grass along the sides of my sidewalk is dead. Is there anything else I can do?

Instead of using salt try using sand after you shovel your walk. Use ‘concrete sand’ this is used in soils to provide aeration and will provide traction to your sidewalk while being less damaging to the lawn.

Hi, we purchased and planted a Snowspring crabapple last fall, and within a week this summer it went from looking amazing to looking like something out of the Walking Dead. The leaves are all brown and crunchy, and it has been watered appropriately. The other two trees we planted at the same time ( a maple and another Snowspring) look great. Is the tree done for?

It sounds like a fungal infection. Can you send some photos to the website? Also are you able to dig your fingernail into the main trunks bark and see green behind the bark? If so then the tree’s still alive.

Do you know if the “Cherry Laurel” is a shrub/bush that can be planted in Manitoba and live through our winters!! ?

This plant is hardy to zone 5 so will not live in Manitoba.

Hi I’d like to know if you have a product that would kill a tree stump and the root system? Thank you

Posted on March 12, 2017

Yes, we have a product called “stump remover” it is $13.49 for a 454 gram package. 175 g will kill/remove a 30 cm stump.

Why is my pine tree dropping an abundance of green pine cones

Posted on March 12, 2017

There are multiple reasons however stress is typically an indicator of cone drop. How old is the tree? Do you see any issues with it?
